York Tour 1
York Station to Clifford's Tower

We start our tour at York Station. Rail has played a huge role in the modern history of York and it is a fitting place for us to begin our tour. Just along the road from us lies the National Rail Museum. We come out of York Station and are greeted by the sight of the famous walls of York. We soon enter the old city through the imposing Micklegate Bar. This was the main southern entry of medieval York and many famous people, including Richard III, Henry VII and even our own Elizabeth II passed through this gateway. Fortunately for our present monarch no heads were displayed on this famous gateway as they had been during medieval times! We then pass through the Micklegate area before crossing over the river Ouse. Ouse Bridge takes us on to King's Staith and onwards to St George's Field. Our first tour finishes at Clifford's Tower.

York Tour 2
Clifford's Tower to Monk Bar

Clifford's Tower is one of York's most recognisable buildings. Many people often mistake it for York Castle. The Tower hides a dark past and we explore the terrible fate of the Jewish population of York who died in the earlier version of the building. We then go past the Assize Courts, the Female Prison and the Debtor's Prison (both now parts of the York Castle Museum) before heading towards Fairfax House and Coppergate. We will learn about the world-famous Jorvik Viking Centre which was built on part of the dig site and which is now one of the top tourist attractions in York.

We then continue our tour past two of York's more peculiarly named streets - Parliament and Pavement before going on to the world-famous Shambles. Here we about the life in the Shambles, and the death of Saint Margaret Clitherow and then we move on to the pretty little buildings of Our Lady Row in Goodramgate. Our tour then ends just outside of the old city limits at the Monk Bar.

York Tour 3
Monk Bar to York Station

Our third and final tour of York retraces our footsteps back to College Street where we pass St William's College before exploring the history of York Minster - possibly the grandest religious building in the United Kingdom. After exploring the Roman columns and the statue of Constantine next to York Minster we head down Stonegate, second in fame only to the Shambles, onto St Helen's Square. Passing the Mansion House, home to York's Lord Mayor, we head over Lendal Bridge and back to York Station.
