York City Walls
Tour 1
Barker Tower to Skeldergate Postern
Our guided tour around York's famous walls starts near to York Station at the Barker Tower. This sits next to Lendal bridge, on the banks of the River Ouse. We walk along the walls, past York Station to Toft's Tower. The section of wall after corner tower leads us on nicely to Micklegate Bar, the principal gateway to the South. This section of our tour covers the walls to the south of the Ouse. We explore the romantically named 'Bitchdaughter Tower' (ok - it wasn't romantic!) and the mound which is all that is left of Baile Hill before finishing at the relatively modern Skeldergate Postern.

Tour 2
Fishergate Postern to the Red Tower
We've now crossed the River Ouse and join the Wall at Fishergate Postern. This impressive tower is soon left behind as we make our way round to Walmgate Bar. This is probably best preserved gate on the City Walls because it has it still has its barbican and we explore this additional defence in some detail. Eventually we come to the unusual little Red Tower at the end of this section of our guided tour.

Tour 3
Layerthorpe Postern to Bootham Bar
We begin the third part of our tour at the tiny little Layerthorpe Postern this leads us on to the stunningly well preserved defences on the way to Monk Bar. We are able to see the fabulous York Minster from this section of wall as well as the Treasurer's House and other fine buildings. After visiting Monk Bar we head up to the intriguingly named Robin Hood Tower before completing the final stretch of the City Walls at Bootham Bar.
St Mary's Abbey Walls
Tour 4
Bootham Bar to Lendal Bridge
The section of Wall between Bootham Bar and Lendal Tower is no longer in existance so we take the chance to head across the road and explore the walls around the old St Mary's Abbey. Our tour finishes at Lendal Tower, just across the River Ouse from our original starting point of Barker Tower.
