York's History - The City Walls Guided Tour Screenshot Gallery
The pictures on this page were taken from the 360 degree panoramic photos used in this CD-ROM. These simple little stills show the level of detail you will enjoy in our "York's History - The City Walls Guided Tour". Remember, what you see here is a tiny part of each scene and that there are far more scenes than the few shown below. This page acts as a screenshot tour rather than the glorious virtual tour which will be your guide around York.

Our tour starts at the Barker Tower which overlooks the River Ouse.
We soon head up the city walls on our way past York Station.
Soon we come to the Micklegate Bar - the principal gateway into historic York.
We get a chance to explore and learn some of the history of Micklegate Bar.
The unpleasantly named 'Bitchdaughter Tower' gives us an excellent view across to the mound of Baile Hill, the sister building to Clifford's Tower.
After crossing the River Ouse we pass the Fishergate Postern before walking round to the fantastically well-preserved Walmgate Bar. Here we can peek over to the Walmgate Bar barbican.
Inside the barbican of Walmgate Bar we can appreciate just how formidable the City Walls of York are. Walmgate Bar is the only tower which retains its original barbican. This gives us an understanding of what Bootham Bar would have looked like had it's barbican not been removed.
The brick-built Red Tower is the last part of the defensive wall before we skip past the River Foss on our way to rejoin the walls...
at Layerthorpe Postern. This tiny little gate marks the start of the stretch of wall which will eventually take us past Monk Bar on our way to Bootham Bar.
Some of the towers on this section of wall are wonderful reminders of just how strategic a town York was.
We pass through Monk Bar...
before turning the corner at the Robin Hood Tower...
on our way to Bootham Bar.
Bootham Bar marks the end of our tour around the city walls but from here we cross the busy road and begin our exploration of the walls around St Mary's Abbey.
