Find Out About...
Greyfriars Kirkyard
Tour 1
We soon learn about Greyfriars Bobby - probably the most famous 'resident' in the whole burial ground, before going on to learn out about 'memento mori' - the symbols of death. Some tour guides tell their groups that this is because people from the Plague were buried nearby...you will find out the truth!
The Covenanters will forever be linked to Greyfriars Kirk and Kirkyard and we come to the Martyr's Monument which remembers their struggle to keep the Church of Scotland free from Royal influence. We also find out about how some Covenanter's died...
Next we ‘meet’ James Craig, designer of Edinburgh’s New Town. James Douglas, Earl of Morton, was once the most powerful man in Scotland but we find out why his tombstone is one of the most missed in the whole Kirkyard.

Tour 2
The second leg of our tour starts at an obscure little tomb which hides a fascinating but violent past. This is the marker for the body of Captain John Porteous, captain of the old Town Guard, who played in the first ever game of golf to be covered by a newspaper but who was ultimately murdered by the ferocious Edinburgh Mob. We pass the Flodden Wall and the marker to the father of Sir Walter Scott before learning about William Carstairs and Alexander Henderson, men crucial to the history of Scotland.
Next come the man who dissected the body of the murderer William Burke and the printer of the first edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. We pass the Covenanter’s Prison before learning about Sir George 'Bluidy' Mackenzie. Sir George's tomb was thought to be haunted and made a great place as a hideout...as you shall discover!

Tour 3
In this tour get a chance to explore the exterior of Greyfriars Kirk. Highlights of this tour include the 'dancing skeleton' which visitors see on the facade of the church as they enter the grounds, the mortsafe built to deter bodysnatchers and the alcoholic, but fair, Duncan Forbes of Culloden.

Tour 4
The Covenanters' Prison is generally off-limits to the public unless you are part of one of the popular ghost tours to the Kirkyard. This is also one of the least understood parts of the whole burial ground. The true story is revealed here and you're given access to most of this area - including the tomb dubbed the 'Black Mausoleum'! This part of the Kirkyard is usually only open for the excellent ghost tours which come into the atmospheric prison but with the 'Greyfriars Kirkyard Interactive Guided Tour' you get to visit anytime you want!
