Mark's charming Yorkshire accent guides you expertly on your journey around York's famous landmarks. Who better to be your own personal guide?
Features
Snickelways Tour 1
Our guided tour begins outside Bootham Bar, one of the most recognisable buildings in historic York. We're soon ducking and diving through a narrow little entry way before we come out into Precentor's Court where a stunning view of York Minster lies before us. We pass the Minster on our way to Monk Bar, the second of the Bars of York's walls seen on our tour. Mark then takes us through the often missed Bedern area, one of the most important areas in historic York.
Snickelways Tour 2
Our next tour of the historic backstreets of York goes from St Sampson's Square and passes along some ancient pathways before we reach the interesting little 'Mad Alice Lane'. After learning about poor Alice, we visit Petergate and the pretty medieval houses of Lady Row on Goodramgate. More fascinating historic buildings feature as we pass by College Street before we reacquaint ourselves with York's splendid Minster. We finish our tour at the Stonegate - York's second most famous street.
Snickelways Tour 3
We leave the busy Stonegate and bang! we're right into what Mark calls the 'quintessence' of the Snickelways - Coffee Yard. This little lane should be on the 'must see' list for any tourist to York along with the walls, the Minster, Clifford's Tower and the Jorvik Viking Centre. We discover a (very) dirty secret behind one of York's street names and experience York's famous market. The market, charismatic as it is only a taster for something everyone to York loves, a visit to the Shambles! We spent a bit of time in the Shambles before coming out onto Foss Bridge Reach - a place named by Mark himself!
Snickelways Tour 4
The peace and tranquillity of Foss Bridge Reach is soon left behind us as we head towards the bustling Pavement, Parliament Square and Jubbergate - all streets in the heart of York's busy shopping centre. Just before we get there we can savour Lady Peckett's Yard - another hidden gem often missed by York's many tourists. Our tour explores some of the 'inner city' snickets and ginnels before we pass the Jorvik Viking Centre at Coppergate on our way to Clifford's Tower and the former site of York Castle.
Snickelways Tour 5
Clifford's Tower has more than one story of mans inhumanity to man and if we think we're going to get a break then we're in for a shock as we cross over the road and past St George's Field - a former execution spot! Fortunately the calming influence of the River Ouse helps soothe use as we meander along King's Staith and onto the old Fish Landing. We head up past St Michael's Church and then finish this short leg of our tour around historic York in Peter Lane.
Snickelways Tour 6
We star just a few metres away from Peter Lane in St Sampson's Square, a place we've been to more than once on our travels around historic York! This final tour takes us onto the Stonegate, past St Helen's Square and the Mansion House, home to York's Mayor. We move up Duncombe Street, passing the magnificent front of York Minster one last time before going underneath Bootham Bar at the end of our circular route.
